PABA (Para amino benzoic acid) is essential for bacterial growth & multiplication (synthesized by bacteria & supplied from environment). By different enzymatic process PABA is converted into Dihydrofolic acid at first & then Tetrahydrofolic acid. Tetrahydrofolic acid acts as a co-factor for single carbon metabolism & Nucleic acid synthesis. But due to structural similarity of PABA with Sulfonamides Dihydropteridin (essential for dihydrofolic acid synthesis) mistakenly combined with Sulfonamides instead of PABA. As a result Dihydrofolic acid synthesis is prevented. As a result bacterial DNA synthesis is interrupted. Sulfonamides are bacteriostatic in action
