Contraindicated to animals with impaired liver and/or renal function & hypersensitivity to amprolium and/or sulfaquinoxaline.
Amprolium is a thiamine antagonist. It inhibits the thiamine uptake by coccidia. It reportedly acts primarily upon the first generation schizont in the cells of the intestinal wall, preventing differentiation of the merozoites. Sulfaquinoxaline inhibits the folic acid, PABA (Para amino benzoic acid) synthesis of coccidian as well as bacteria. Vitamin K has antihaemorrhagic activity. Plasma clotting factors VII (Antihaemophilic Factor), IX (Christmas Factor) and X (Stuart-Prower Factor) are dependent on Vitamin K3 for synthesis. These four blood-clotting proteins are synthesized in the liver in inactive forms and then converted to biologically active forms by Vitamin K3.
With medicine: Exogenous administration of thiamine in high dosages may reverse or reduce the efficacy of amprolium.
With food & other: Not known
Common: Occasionally may cause GI or neurologic effects.
Rare: At high dosages in laying-hens egg-drop and in broilers growth inhibition and polyneuritis can occur
May cause thiamine deficiency if given at high rates.
