Dose and dosage

Cattle

 Calves : 7.5 g per 50 kg body weight, for 3-5 days.

Horse

Foals : 7.5 g per 50 kg body weight, for 3-5 days.

Fish (Large)

1 g per 10 kg body weight, for 3-5 days

Poultry

0.5 to 1.0 gm per litter of drinking water for 3-5 days

Indication Notes:

When other antibiotics and chemotherapeutics fail due to resistance problem. Calves & foals: indicated in respiratory & gastro-intestinal tract infections like bronchopneumonia, bronchitis, diarrhea, enteritis & scour. 

Fish: gram-positive cocci infections of fish.

Contraindication Notes:

 contraindicated in animals with hypersensitivity to the erythromycin, Sulphadiazine & Trimethoprim. 

This combination provides broad spectrum activity against a wide range of bacterial & some protozoal infections. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic highly effective against gram positive bacteria, and Mycoplasma. It is also effective against some gram-negative bacteria such as Nessaria spp. & Haemophilus spp. Erythromycin works by binding with 50s ribosomal subunit, consequently inhibit protein synthesis of bacteria. Sulphadiazine inhibits biosynthesis of PABA to dihydrosulphonic acid & Trymethoprim inhibits the biosynthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid. 

 With medicine: Should not be used concurrently with macrolide antibiotic, chloramphenicol, Tylosin & Lincosomide. 

With food & others: In the case of erythromycin, there are no specific foods that should exclude from diet when receiving this medication. 

 Common side effects: No side effects observed at recommended doses. Rare side effects: No side effects observed at recommended doses. 

 This drug is relatively non-toxic. 

 May be used in pregnant & lactating animals but risk & benefit may be considered. 

 Oral erythromycin should not be used in ruminants as diarrhea may occur. 

 Egg 6 days, Meat: 5 days. 

 Store below 300 C temperature and dry place, protected from light. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
